Book Description
Jaffe’s Cinderella starts right out with a variation on the tale which involves a father asking his three daughters to declare how much they love him. The older two girls answer in obvious ways, “as much as diamonds” and “as much as gold and silver.” But Mireleh declares, “the way meat loves salt.” Her rabbi father misunderstands, exiles her and the story is off and running.
Set in Poland, the story is filled with interesting facts about Jewish tradition and it does have a slipper and a wedding.
Definitely recommended, especially as a jumping off point for discussions about the interrelationship of tradition and values.
Reviews & Testimonials
From Booklist-
“Children will enjoy the triumph of the outcast as well as the loving connections between the generations and between the stories.”
From School Library Journal-
“This retelling is enriched by a clear introduction that shows the place of the story in literary traditions; by flowing language that will make it a fine read aloud; and by linocut illustrations done in oil on rice paper, showing simple faces, embroidered clothing, and rustic homes…A fine addition to folktale collections.”
